Chamber Music with Jeffrey Jamner
APPLY by August 15th, 2019
WHY study chamber music? Unlike solo playing or playing with a conductor, students learn how to listen and respond to each other for timing and balance, and they have to learn to negotiate their interpretive choices as a group. This is one of the most important and powerful ways to grow as a musician. Students enrolled in this chamber music class will be placed in chamber music ensembles (duos, trios, quartets, etc.) with music students at a similar level. They will receive 10 coachings per semester with Jeff Jamner and with other LAM faculty, work on their parts as part of their weekly private lessons, and are encouraged to rehearse between coachings. Middle and high school students may wish to prepare for the Macauley Chamber Music Competition run by the Chamber Music Society of Louisville.
*Space is limited and assignments will be confirmed by September 1st on your acceptance into the program based on availability, level, and pairing with other applicants.
Dates: 10 coachings between September 15th-December 15th
Price: $200 for Semester

More about Music Together:
Music is a universal language. It transcends boundaries and reaches beyond culture to touch the depths of our souls, express our common emotions, and inspire us all. Music Together® connects families and communities across the globe as they express and explore our basic human instinct for making music. We believe that being a music-maker is as much a basic life skill as being a walker or a talker and that all children can achieve basic competence in music, provided their early music environment is sufficiently rich. Being a music-maker is our birthright - a basic human need.
Did you know all children are musical?
This research-based program is based on the belief that all children are musical. All children can learn to sing in tune and keep a steady beat and enjoy the music of their culture. But these activities are learned, and best learned through developmentally appropriate experiential activities and through the model of their primary caregivers.
What does this mean?
That children learn to sing the same way they learn to talk and walk and eat – through play and watching and imitating their primary caregivers, whether that means parent, grandparent, babysitter or nanny. And the families who make Music Together at Shine will tell you that the class is as much for them, as for their child!
LAM hosts national composition workshop
Dates: August 10-11 and 17-18, 2019 (inclusive)
Location: Louisville Academy of Music, University of Louisville
Pathways participants are talented young performers who may not yet identify as composers, but are passionately curious about creating their own music. The 2019 Pathways instruction team includes Dr. Allison Ogden, composer/performers Jecorey Arthur and Rachel Grimes, members of Longleash, and Loretto Project composer fellows Derek Carter (U. of L.), Sunbin Kim (Manhattan School of Music), Lucy McKnight (USC), and Ayanna Woods (Yale Univ.)
Participants will practice basic tools, techniques and approaches that will help them articulate their own musical ideas and enable them to pursue further explorations in composition. Topics covered will include improvisation, theory and form, style, and extended techniques. Over the course of two weekends, students will participate in group workshops, receive individual instruction, and will share a completed miniature composition for their own instrument by the final session of the workshop.
The Pathways Initiative will take place over four days, from August 10-11 and 17-18, and will be hosted at the Louisville Academy of Music and U. of L.’s Bird Recital Hall.
